Simon Road Hokkien Mee

https://danielfooddiary.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/simonroadhokkienmee6.jp g" alt="" border="0" />

Popular ?Food King Good? Hokkien Mee At Hougang.

Simon Road Hokkien Mee has rolled out contactless islandwide delivery for the convenience of customers. Delivery charges will be fully earned by their delivery partners.

This stall previously known as ?Nam Heng Hokkien Mee?, has moved to a kopitiam at Hougang Street 21 a few years ago, and is now officially known as ?Simon Road Hokkien Mee?.

Chef Willin Low was the one who introduced me to this Hokkien Mee.

He would describe during the ?good-old day?s after booked out of camp during his army days every weekend, he would stomp to Nam Heng Restaurant at Simon Road even before getting home, unlike many of his exhausted army mates.

?I am there in front of the straight-faced uncle in my green uniform, smelling of mud and sweat. I didn?t care. I just wanted my Hokkien Mee!?

Willin exclaimed that he must dabao the noodles and not eat it at the coffeeshop. This is so that the noodles could absorb all the ?chup? by the time he got home.

He excitedly described the best moment ? it was when he opened the packet and the pork lard aroma would fill up the house.

He loved it so much that he would eat it at least once every week since his childhood days. And this Hokkien Mee has very much influenced this award-winning chef?s cooking style.

The noodles get its flavours from a combination of prawn heads and pork ribs, fried until very dry so that the noodles and bee hoon absorb the tasty stock.

Interesting to note that the stall supposedly stopped using pork lard in its frying since the H1N1 outbreak in the old place, but switched back after its move.

?Free-flow? crunchy pork lard is also provided for customers to scoop on put on their own if you dine there.

Seng Hiang Bak Chor Mee (成香肉脞麵)

A family business that is now handled by the younger duo siblings who took over from their elder brother & parents, you would be surprised to know that their family business first started out selling Chinese fried dough fritters & Char kway teow.

It was because of pragmatic & profit reasons that they have decided to stop selling Char kway teow & replaced it with Satay & Minced pork noodles in the 1980s.

With their Minced pork noodles now thriving in business, they have switched their focus by offering it as their sole dish on the menu.

If you have done your ?homework?, you would have known that the soup variation is their specialty, although they do offer the dry variation as well.

It is advisable to avoid dinner hours or you will find yourself waiting for at least half an hour.

Minced pork noodles has always been one of the special dishes that I am proud to be a Singaporean which is typically served in a dry variation.

I have never fantasised or associated this dish to be served with its counterpart - the soup variation - instead.

Although I am aware that there is such a variation only a few years back but I am not really enticed to get my hands on it due to the mundane presentation that resembles of that to a bowl of fishball noodle.

For some reasons when I was looking up the net on this particular dish, I was amazed to find out that the vicinity of Bedok is incredibly known for it & it has a couple of such stalls.

One of the reputable names - Seng Hiang Bak Chor Mee - is no stranger to this particular variation of dry Minced pork noodles!

Hougang Fried Oyster

There are still many hidden hawker gems in Singapore and after ten years of blogging I still feel the thrill when I find them!

This particular stall was first recommended to me by Xiao Di, the young Hokkien Mee hawker quite a while back but it took me some time before I finally got to see what the fuss was all about.

Well, it turns out that the ?fuss? is about an elderly couple who are so passionate about their food that they even make their own chilli sauce from scratch. ?From scratch? meaning that the dipping sauce is made from fresh chillies and not factory processed chilli paste.

It also means a robust sambal chilli made with lots of dried shrimps and pork lard that is rendered at the stall.

Pork lard.

Yes you heard it right. Pork lard.

This is one of the few stalls I know who still insists on using pork lard to fry the oyster omelette.

Their typical plate of oyster omelette is 70% crispy and 30% gooey which is a very nice combination of textures.

For those who have dentures, you can also request for them not to fry it too crispy, so that you can still gum the the gooey bits.

The flavour of the final dish is a combination of the eggs, lard, fish sauce, oyster and sambal chilli. T

This is a traditional, tried and tested combination of ingredients which is guaranteed to draw out that ?shiok? from deep within your belly and propel it out through your mouth.

The other thing that you would be very impressed with is the price and quality of oysters.

They use very plump, big sized Korean oysters which are nice and creamy on the inside.

So glad to be able to find another hidden gem! Their big and creamy oysters, pork lard and home made chilli sauce should be good enough reasons for any lovers of oyster omelette to make a trip down to see if it has what it takes to become their new favourite stall.

Tian seng fried prawn mei

Found an old school Hokkien mee at Circuit Road Food Centre. The man here tells me he has been frying Hokkien mee for 40 years and his father started the stall before him along Mattar Road! Thin beehoon, dry type like Nam Sing!

I was attracted by the smell as I was cycling past the food Centre! Couldn?t help but stop by to buy a plate! Any fans here? Tian Seng Fried prawn mee.

Tastes not bad. They use the thinner bee hoon then usually the others user the thicker one.

Seems to use charcoal to cook? Taste a little charcoally.

Comes with wok-fried mee, prawns and pork. This version has a touch of smokiness and slightly on the saltier side. A great dinner at a quaint neighbourhood!

There are quite a few people buying and also calling for take out. When i was talking with one of the stall owner he says this stall when you come just order if not you need to wait quite long. Overall pretty ok.

Jalan Tua Kong Lau Lim Mee Pok

The Art of Mee Pok: Perfectly Al Dente Mee Pok That Will Leave You Wanting More In Bedok

It has been hotly debated which area of Singapore has the best food. For me, there is no discussion; clearly, the East has better food (fight me). Of the myriad of reasons why the East is so great, one of them has to be the food haven of Simpang Bedok.

Just across the street is where you?ll find Jalan Tua Kong Lau Lim ? The Art of Mee Pok amongst three other mee pok places.

If you love mee pok then you have to make your way down here.

When you get to the Jalan Tua Kong Lau Lim ? The Art of Mee Pok, be prepared with your tissue to chope your seats.

There was an endless stream of hungry people waiting for their mee pok. Granted, I came on a Saturday so there?s the weekend crowd to take into account.

Nevertheless, Jalan Tua Kong Lau Lim does attract quite a number of people on any given day, so it would be helpful to come early.

Another thing you?d notice about Jalan Tua Kong Lau Lim is perhaps the scale of the business. The staff were clad in the same bright orange shirts and were taking orders and dishing them out like a well-oiled machine.

Naturally, with operations of such extent, I do get a little sceptical with whether the food lives up to the accolades plastered on the wall.

I have been eating mee pok for as long as I can remember, so trust me when I tell you I know mee pok.

There are people whole have been eating here since their secondary school days and I can see why.

Each component was well-executed and top-notch. There are only a handful of dishes I would eat for the rest of life and mee pok is one of them.
While the crowd is not my favourite thing in the world, I think for a stellar bowl of mee pok it?s totally worth it.

Chef Kang Noodle House

Michelin-Starred Chef?s Wanton Noodle Stall

There?s always an air of excitement when a Michelin-starred chef opens a new establishment, more so if that new project is a hawker stall.

Following his one-Michelin-starred establishment, Chef Kang Kitchen, Chef Ang Song Kang presents his take on wanton noodles with Chef Kang?s Noodle House.

We have heard about the 2-hour waiting time and electronic counters used to indicate the number of plates left. Understandably, we were rather nervous before we turned the corner and approached the stall.

As it was a weekday morning, the queue at Chef Kang Noodle House was a fraction of what we were expecting. Phew!

Blocked by buildings on all sides, the kopitiam which was located under a shelter, was impossible for anyone to spot from outside Jackson square (and perhaps even from inside).

I?ll hesitate to call it the best I ever had, but there?s not a doubt in my mind that it was a great plate of wanton noodles.

Hai Kee Teochew Cha Kuay Teow

Literally a One-Man ?Show?

Telok Blangah Crescent Food Centre gets really quiet and dead after 3pm since most stalls only operate in the day, but not this particular row where Hai Kee Teochew Cha Kuay Teow sits.

Hai Kee moved here more than 5 years ago, from Margaret Drive Hawker Centre, which Hai Kee called home for more than 4 decades.

With more than 50 years of experience, Loh Kwee Leng performs a one-man show, one plate at a time. And I really mean one plate at a time ? even if the order is 5 same plates of cha kway teow.

Loh skilfully whips up each plate, breaking each egg with a metal spatula before opening the cracked egg with just his left hand.

The 2 rows of tables in front of the stall are never occupied. It?s as though there is an unspoken rule that those who are queuing between these 2 rows get to sit facing away from the tables while waiting.

An elderly man started queuing behind the first few standing patrons, thinking that that?s where the queue ends.

Those who were sitting down became kan cheong (nervous) and started to stand up and closed the gaps (so kiasu omg).

Soon, the elderly man realised the situation but was shocked to see that the end of the queue is at the opposite stall. Sheepishly, he said: ?Oh, wah, so the queue is there?? I smiled and nodded.

Despite the constant long queue, Loh was smiley and friendly, chatting with regulars while he continued his performance without getting distracted.

When the queue got too long, Loh managed the queue by reminding his patrons to queue around the tables so as to not block other stalls.

That is also probably why it?s almost impossible to occupy those rows of tables near Hai Kee as people will be standing around you watching you eat while they queue.

Before heading to Hai Kee, I was warned that Loh is usually grumpy. But Loh wasn?t at all.

In fact, he was very cheerful and approachable. By the way, he scoops up lards from his condiment bowl and swings it to the wok like a kungfu-trained master chef (literally a one-man ?show?). Also, Loh wipes off any grease on each plate before he passes it to his patrons.

I will be back with my dad because I think people of his generation would love Loh?s cha kuay teow.

Fatty Thai

Worthy Thai Wanton Mee Along Beach Road.

Located along Beach Road, 2-week-old Fatty Thai is the newest stall in Lim Si Mi Caf?. Diners don?t really have much of a choice here as the stall only has 2 dishes.

The two dishes are a Thai version of our local favourite wanton mee, which is also called Ba Mee Kiao Moo Dang, and Khao Ka Moo(braised pig trotters with rice).

Run by three 22 year olds, Edmund, Darryll and Wei Zhe, Fatty Thai?s story is a rather peculiar one.

Edmund shared that the trio was having a holiday in Thailand and was nursing a hangover.

The first thing that they had was a Thai-style wonton mee at a random street stall, and things rolled into motion since then.

The wanton mee, which was drier as compared to the saucy Singapore counterpart, gave them the inspiration to start their own business and bring Thai-style wanton mee to Singapore.

Food is good and satisfying.

Song Han Carrot Cake 松汉菜头粿

Popular hawker stall offering a unique version of the Singaporean ?carrot cake?, also known as chai tow kway.

Song Han?s rendition of the stir fried radish cake (both white and black versions) features both curry powder and prawns and is made with a higher egg and chye poh (preserved radish) ratio.

The black in the black-and-white version ($3) isn?t very black or sweet but it complements the white counterpart.

The shrimps give the dish a savory seafood taste.

Song Han Carrot Cake is the only carrot cake stall in Singapore to use curry powder, which makes it truly one-of-a-kind.

Plus, the handmade carrot cakes go for as cheap as S$2 (definitely one of the cheaper ones around) and it comes with plenty of eggs, springy prawns, and crunchy chye poh.

I really liked how the curry powder wasn't too overwhelming and that I could still taste the natural wok hei smokiness from the carrot cake.

I applauded the uncle for adding so many shrimps in my takeaway container. The fried carrot cake was also not too oily or salty.

Therefore, I will recommend fried carrot cake fans to visit Song Han just to check out the unique taste of its fried carrot cakes.

Food is good and satisfying.

Geylang Claypot Rice

https://danielfooddiary.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/geylangclaypot11.jp g" alt="" border="0" />

Famous Geylang Lor 33 Claypot Rice Shop Finally Reopens With Modern Interior At Beach Road.

Do not be confused, Geylang Claypot Rice is located at 361 Beach Road (opposite The Concourse) and not Geylang Lor 33 anymore.

After a wait of several months, the popular Geylang Claypot Rice has moved from a humble coffeeshop, and reopened to a modern swanky shop with 3 shop spaces.

And oh, AIRCON.

Founded by Mr. Ng Kim Hock, Geylang Claypot Rice has been in business for more than 30 years. (They used to have a shop at Maju Ave, but that closed.)

Considered by many as one of the most popular in Singapore, Geylang Claypot Rice is also the last few ones that still uses charcoal to cook the rice. (The other two popular stalls are New Lucky Claypot Rice at Holland Drive and Lian He Ben Ji Claypot Rice at Chinatown.

The old eatery at the Geylang location was also listed under the Michelin Guide Singapore with a ?Michelin Plate?.

The new space is quite classily done up, with 1970s coffeeshop d?cor, names of dishes on colourful panels by the side (like HK char chaan teng style), all in a comfortable and spacious environment.

Each pot is served with toppings of pork belly, bits of salted mackerel fish, well-marinated chicken, two types of lup cheong (Chinese sausages), and fresh vegetables.

Salted fish flavours were not that apparent though.

The server helped to add dark soy sauce, mixed them all together, to achieve a sweet, savoury and smoky dish.

Do help yourself to some of the cut chilli or two types of chilli available at the accompaniments counter.

After a heaty meal of Claypot Rice, it would be befitting to have some cooling desserts to make the throat and body feel more at ease. (Didn?t help that they ran out of soups as well.)

Reservation is highly recommended, and do call to order your Claypot Rice in advance to save time.
Food is good and satisfying.

Goldhill Family Restaurant

Super Cheap & Good Zhap Cai Png!

I think that zhap cai png, also known as mixed vegetable rice or economy rice, is a staple for every Singaporean ? all the different races have their own versions of mixed rice with vegetables.

It isn?t easy to find a zhap cai png stall that serves cheap and good food, and I?m thankful that I?ve found a hidden gem in the heart of Hougang.

Goldhill Family Restaurant does see a long queue, which can stretch all the way to the carpark, during meal times. Many a time, the construction workers nearby would place a huge order, so be prepared to wait for a while.

XIN LU TEOCHEW FISHBALL KWAY TEOW MEE SOUP 新路潮州鱼圆粿條面汤

Mei Ling Market & Food Centre. It is a two-storey building where residents can do their marketing on the ground floor before going for their breakfast at the food centre up stairs.

As Stirling Road is a mature estate, my initial thoughts about the food centre is that it would be dark, dirty and maybe bad air-circulation as well.

My first visit to the food centre last week, however, painted a very different picture. The food centre is extremely clean with no litter on the floor, illumination is bright, there is no buildup of dirty bowls on the tables, and the area is spacious and airy with the high ceiling.

You will not leave the food centre smelling like Char Kway Teow or Fried Carrot Cake.

This is all thanks to a upgrading programe which I just found out was completed about eight years ago.

Even though it has been years since the upgrading, its condition is as good as new.

I must say this is by far the most well-maintained food centre I had ever seen.

Xin Lu Teochew Fishball Noodles used to be from Margaret Drive Hawker.

Their fishballs were made fresh in the stall and they were real huge and very springy! The chilli was also handmade by the owner.

When mixed with the al dente noodles, it has a balance of sweet, savoury and spicy flavour.

The boy took a big mouthful and got choked on the first bite because of the chilli sauce but he just couldn?t stop eating.

Food is very nice and satisfying.

Yuan Yuan Claypot Rice

Great Claypot Rice That still Cooked Using Charcoal.

The cooking of claypot rice is a slow process that requires a lot of patience, especially when the rice grains are cooked from scratch.

I learnt about Yuan Yuan Claypot Rice (源源砂煲饭) when I was working on the Google Pixel campaign.

The waiting time here can stretch up to 30 minutes during peak hours. This place is always packed!

The first thing that caught my eye was the charcoal stoves. Using old rice grains, each pot of rice is prepared upon order and cooked over a charcoal fire. What you get is a nicely-charred crust at the bottom of the pot, and every rice grain carries a lovely smokiness. B

efore the grains are fully cooked, a plate of marinated chicken pieces, lup cheong (Chinese sausages) and salted fish are placed on top of the rice.

Uncle Seah is already in his 70s, but he is not retiring yet. It?s great that his son and daughter-in-law help out at the stall at night.

While it?s really tiring and tough, I really hope that they don?t give up their craft!

The wait for their famous claypot rice was long, but the delicious rice was definitely worth the wait. Such a satisfying dinner, I will be back!

Deanna Kitchen

Singapore one and only and first halal prawn noodle.

One of the newest additions to the Toa Payoh West Market & Food Centre (Lorong 1), Deanna?s Kitchen is serving up halal prawn mee with luxurious add-ons such as crayfish and giant prawns at relatively affordable prices.

I first came to know Denise through Instagram and she told me about her plans to set up a Prawn Noodle stall and some more a halal one! I thought the idea was interesting and told her I?ll definitely be there when she opens.

So today is the day she started her dream. And as promised, I was there to lend her my support.

Specialising in halal prawn noodles, this seafood noodles stall has garnered a strong following thanks to their umami-packed broth.

Replacing pork bones with more prawn shells and anchovies, the dark brown broth is extremely rich and will leave you craving for another bowl.

I was initially puzzled as to why the stall closes so early but a short chat with Deanna revealed that she begins her day as early as 4am in order to prepare the ingredients and broth for the day.

On the day of our visit, Deanna was even extending her operating hours till 8pm in order to cater to the Ramadan crowd, which means she would have been working at the stall for a whopping 16 hours.

That?s some incredible passion and dedication right there.

Food is very nice and satisfying.

The Noodle House(公仔面家)

This 24-Hour Cafe At Taman Jurong Shopping Centre Serves Local Comfort Food From S$3

There is nothing quite as comforting as a piping hot bowl of instant noodles and we love how a packet of these noodles can be such a simple yet versatile ingredient that can be used in a variety of different ways.

The Noodle House took their love for instant noodles up a notch by setting up a store that specialises in dishes that incorporate instant noodles. Since then, they have expanded their menu to include other noodles dishes such as satay bee hoon, minced meat noodles, and laksa.

Many people have asked why their store name has a question mark behind the word ?noodle?.

Their main reason is to remind themselves that their noodles must be consistent in quality or they will get many ?question marks? from their customers, while the other reason is that in Chinese, the term 公仔麵 (gōng zǎi mi?n) refers to instant noodles.

The small cafe is a cosy, quirky place to head to for lunch with a group of colleagues or a simple meal with some friends.
