88 Hong Kong Roast Meat
https://danielfooddiary.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/88hongkongroast9.jp g" alt="" border="0" />
One Of The Best Char Siew Specialist in Singapore, At Tyrwhitt Road.
88 Hong Kong Roast Meat Specialist is known for their roasts such as Sio Bak ? complete with crunchy crackling, moist meat and melt-in-your-mouth fats. (However, the last, last time I had it, the Sio Bak wasn?t that impressive. Perhaps it was because I was one of the last customers and the meat had been left out for a while.)
Chef Martin has moved for a few times, from Tampines, JB, Bukit Batok, Lavender to its current location at 153 Tyrwhitt Rd.
Finally the wild goose (pardon the pun) chase has stopped. The food price is reasonable so order away!
That layer of skin with fats from the Roast Duck (which is reared in Malaysian but slaughtered in Singapore) was almost life-changing as you let it slide andlinger around your mouth.
Every plate of rice came with two types of chilli ? one closer to the chicken rice type sauce, the other dry chilli with XO sauce included.
Truly a roast meat gem found in Singapore.
The Char Siew is prepared within the stall, with laborious steps from braising the pork loin with a sweet malt sugar marinate, blow-drying, roasting to drenching the pieces over with dark gooey sauce.
The pieces were both moist and full of bite, with a good layer of char (okay, maybe some parts could be too burnt).
Very satisfying.

Lau Wang Claypot Delights
https://danielfooddiary.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/lauwang7.jp g" alt="" border="0" />
Homely Claypot Food at Serangoon Central.
It did take me a good 15 minutes to locate Block 263 Serangoon Central Drive. After I found it, I came to realize the corner coffeeshop at the ?backside? was actually just about 5-10 minutes? walk from Serangoon NEX, with a signboard displaying ?Wang Jiao?, housing one of the most known claypot stall in this district.
Lau Wang Claypot Delights 老王砂煲小厨 has been serving claypot dishes since 1985, though it was just months back when the young boss took up the entire corner shop at this block.
The shop is back-facing, so was quite breezy and with a pleasant environment.
The little Wang Jiao Coffeeshop also contains a Mee Pok Master stall selling Teochew noodles and laksa, and another selling kopi and toast.
If you are at NEX and want to experience value-for-money tasty claypot dishes for the family, Lau Wang is just a short walk away.

AH WING WANTON MEE
Located at EMPRESS ROAD MARKET & FOOD CENTRE.
When I was previously looking up Commonwealth Crescent Market & Food Centre on Google map, I discovered that Empress Road Market & Food Centre (also known as Farrer Road Food Centre) is just a little further up.
I did not realize that Farrer Road is actually so close to the Queenstown and Commonwealth area.
I have wanted to check out Empress Road Market & Food Centre since a few years back but shelved the plans as I thought it is rather out of the way.
Now that I know how easy it is to get there from my place, I decided to pay a visit to the food centre even though if it meant I had to take three buses to reach my destination (but it's okay, I love bus rides especially when it's raining and with my ear pods plugged in).
So, what makes me want to come Empress Road Market & Food Centre all these years? It is all because of Ah Wing Wanton Mee!
I once saw a photo of their wanton mee and I was fascinated by their plump wantons and charred char siew that I promised myself I would have a plate of it one of these days. The "one of these days" took a little longer than expected but better late than never, right?
From my research, the owner of this popular stall has moved to Singapore from Hong Kong about 10 years ago and there is always a constant queue for their signature wanton mee.
On the day of my visit, there were just two customers in the queue.
I quickly joined them and placed my order for a $4 plate of noodle which came with a generous portion of char siew and five boiled wantons.
The exterior of their char siew is caramelized in a thick layer of dark marinade while the texture is moist and tender. However, the cut of meat used is lean with no fat so that takes away a bit of the enjoyment.
Nonetheless, I am happy as long as the char siew is not the nonsensical type dyed with red coloring.
Ah Wing Wanton Mee is value for money and seems rather popular but chances of me coming back for it is not high.

Famous For Fishball Noodles & Herh Keow, Reopens At Yio Chu Kang
Hardcore fans of Song Kee Fishball Noodles and herh keow (fish dumplings) would be glad to know that they have reopened (again) at 100 Yio Chu Kang Road.
It has closed its outlet at 128 Tembeling Road, Joo Chiat.
Do not be deceived if you see a short queue at the outlet.
Customers are likely to get many packets for their family at home. Or some would just need extra soup.
Due to its popularity, the wait to dabao at the new Yio Chu Kang outlet can be anything from an hour to two.

Ban Chuan Braised Duck Rice
Curb Your Braised Duck Cravings Here.
Ban Chuan Braised Duck Rice has been in business for 38 years and is currently run by a 2nd generation 52-year-old hawker.
I have a personal bias towards the Hokkien type of duck rice with its gloriously thick and flavourful sauce and one stall that makes a beautiful plate of this sort of duck rice is Ban Chuan.
I usually add a side of toufu to my duck rice which totals up to a very affordable $3.70 and for that, the portion of duck meat and add-ons are very generous.
Apart from being extremely delicious, this plate of duck rice comes with a small side of peanuts that balance out the tastes and textures of the dish nicely.
The chili sauce is the right amount of sour, spicy and sweet and the soup works as a lovely cleanser at the end of the meal.
Come by for some yummy braised duck rice and kway chap!

Come Daily Fried Hokkien Prawn Mee 天天来炒福建虾面
https://danielfooddiary.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/comedaily6.jp g" alt="" border="0" />
The little joke we had about this Hokkien Mee stall is that even if we 天天来 (come daily), it doesn?t? 天天开 (open daily).
Operating since 1968, Come Daily 天天来炒福建虾面 is one of the popular stalls at Toa Payoh Lor 1 that serve up Fried Hokkien Mee.
Some may just rate it as the best in Singapore, and the Michelin Guide has also listed it in the guide with a Michelin Plate.
This small hawker centre consists of only 40 stalls, yet the food on offer is more than satisfying. It also has an interesting configuration, divided into four sections.
After renovations the last year, the Come Daily stall has a revamped signage, bigger menu, and the previous hawker-owner has passed on the roles of cooking to the next generation.
If you come during peak-hour weekends, the waiting time can be from 45 minutes to an hour.
I remember that in the past, the texture was a lot ?creamier? and stickier, while the current plate seems to be soupier / wetter, and could do with slightly more wok-hei
At least the noodles itself is infused with the prawn and pork broth, imparting a rich and mildly-sweet flavour.
Overall I felt that Come Daily Fried Hokkien Prawn Mee (天天来炒福建虾面) gets my thumb up for a delicious plate fried hokkien prawn mee.
It will easily made it into my top 10 fried hokkien mee in Singapore.

Madam Leong Ban Mian
Authentic Hakka-styled Ban Mian.
Have you heard of the saying ?when life throws you lemons, make lemonade?? The story of Madam Leong Ban Mian models that closely.
As a single parent, Vivian Leong?s grit and perseverance through tough times is an exemplar of a mother. Inspired by her mum?s very own hakka-style ban mian, Vivian, 42, decided to take up the mantle of a hawker to support herself and her daughter.
Vivian shared with me that the jump from being a housewife to a hawker was a big and risky one, but it definitely is worth it.
Situated just a 10-minute walk from Commonwealth MRT, Madam Leong Ban Mian offers healthy yet tasty comfort food which is especially apt for rainy days. Vivian has high regard for the quality of food that she dishes out, and you?ll definitely taste it in her ban mian.
Her ban mian is made by hand daily using egg, flour and water without any preservatives or MSG.
She told me that her ban mian is a tad more yellow than others because there is a higher egg content as it gives the noodles a springier texture. If you love QQ noodles, she recommends opting for the ban mian instead of you mian or other thinner variations.
All her sauces and broth are also made by her daily based on her mum?s recipe. Vivian also told me that the broth can make or break the ban mian and it is essential that she gets it right.
She simmers the broth, which is made from yellow beans and anchovies, for 2 hours before it is ready to be served.
She hopes that her food can help to bring a taste of home to Malaysians working here in Singapore.
Vivian has also ventured into Thai food by opening another stall beside her Ban Mian stall.
it?s not easy committing to such high standards whilst shouldering heavy responsibilities at home. If you?re in the vicinity, come down and show some love; I?m sure you won?t be disappointed.

Tian Wai Tian Fish Head Steamboat (天外天潮洲魚頭爐)
Started in the 1980s, this restaurant has been serving fish head steamboat ever since.
Despite its notorious reputation of poor customer service, the restaurant has never gone a day without a long line of customers who are waiting to savour their wonderful dishes.
?Tian Wai Tian Fish Head Steamboat (天外天 潮洲鱼头炉)? is a Teochew-style restaurant that is located at Opal Crescent, and opens daily from 5.30pm till late night.
The restaurant itself is able to only house a limited number of tables & chairs, but fret not, for they have extra tables and chairs that stretch all the way to the front & back-alleys to cater to more customers.
It is strongly advised that you come early as the seats are limited & the waiting time for the food to arrive on your table can be quite long at times.
The taste of the food has been very consistent no matter how many times I have patronised the restaurant, which goes to show that the chefs are skilled masters of their own crafts.
All in all, this place is highly recommended if you are into great food and are willing to sacrifice the comfort of air-conditional & service!
Definitely a place that you want to be here especially on a rainy day, where indulging over such a heavenly steamboat is indeed one of the best paradise that you can ever ask for!

Pow Sing Restaurant
Pow Sing Restaurant is a nice family restaurant in Serangoon Garden.
I have been wanting to try Pow Sing for the longest time and finally managed to do so a few weeks back. Started in 1983, the owners are hainanese and wanted to share with Singaporeans the true taste of ?Hainanese Chicken Rice?.
They first set up a chicken rice stall at the current place and later hired a nonya chef and changed name to ?Pow Sing Restaurant?.
Today the eatery is simply known as Pow Sing Restaurant and it offers much more than just chicken rice.
It has become a very popular neighbourhood restaurant with a wide variety of dishes including Nonya delicacies.
Pow Sing was started by Hainanese gentlemen Mr Lee Chin Soo and Mr Steven Tan.
Pow Sing Hainanese Chicken Rice stall was opened at the place where Pow Sing Restaurant now stands.
Right at the entrance of Pow Sing Restaurant you still see chickens on display and the chef still dishes out chicken rice there like in the old days.
The difference is that we can now have the chicken rice in air-conditioned comfort and enjoy it with many other dishes as well.

Jin Ji Teochew Braised Duck
Duck Rice which was Given A New Look.
Chicken rice balls, you probably have eaten it. Now how about duck rice balls? While I am a supporter of downright traditional heritage food, I can?t deny that modernisation has its charm too.
Now, how about having duck rice bento in Chinatown Food Centre with golden lava egg? J
in Ji Teochew Braised Duck & Kway Chap (金记潮洲卤鸭) has always been serving classic teochew braised duck for more than 30 years. It was only recently that the second-generation hawker, Melvin, puts a fresh look on classic by coming up with Duck Rice Bento to attract the younger crowd.
While innovation is welcoming, what distinguishes it as the quality of the dish. Slices of braised duck meat were still succulent, retaining a bite but adequately tender.
The yam rice topped with dried shrimps and fried shallots was little mild in flavours, but it?s softer and sticky enough to form a ball.
Look, there are also daikon slices to separate the rice balls! When you combined the rice with other dishes in the set, it forms a perfect formula.
It?s interesting to see how our local food has evolved overtime. Can?t decide if you should eat the duck rice or kway chap? Get the best of the both worlds from their bento set loh! It is unique on its own, yet still comforting.

Hua Ji XO Fish Head Bee Hoon
Popular Fried Fish Head Noodle Soup With Long Steady Queues At Old Airport Rd.
Every time I’m at Old Airport Road Food Centre, I find at a loss because I can never decide what I want to eat.
With so many must-try stalls at this popular food spot, could there possibly be more to add to the list?
Of course, the promising hub doesn’t disappoint. Walking down the row of stalls, I was drawn to Hua Ji XO Fish Head Bee Hoon solely based on the extensive queue it attracted.
Its bright yellow signage wasn’t hard to miss. I also noticed that everyone in the queue left with the same dish on their tray – a brimming bowl of fish head noodle soup.
As kiasu as I was, I joined the queue and followed suit. You’d think they only sell one popular item as per their stall name, but that wasn’t all.
Despite the endless bowls of fish head noodle soup, I thought I’d try both their best-seller and runners-up.
Hua Ji XO Fish Head Bee Hoon certainly nailed it with their renowned bowl of soup.
I must say, I would return in a heartbeat just for another sip of that heavenly soup!
For their other dishes, I’d suggest giving it a miss.
While my experience with their runner-up dish wasn’t quite encouraging, their fish head noodle soup is all you need to try if you’re at Old Airport Road Food Centre.

Fishball Story
Opens in Geylang? Till 2AM!
All the chest-beating and hair-tearing over the erosion of hawker culture here may seem over the top, except that it is not.
The food people of a certain age enjoyed decades ago have either disappeared or been diluted.
Fortunately, some young people have taken up the challenge to uphold tradition.
One of them is Douglas Ng, 25, who opened a stall two years ago to sell fishball noodles made using his grandmother's recipe.
Fishball Story isn?t just another ordinary hawker story. It is about a successful story of young hawkerpreneur Douglas who first ventured out from a small hawker stall to earning Michelin Bib Gourmand award and eventually owning a coffeeshop.
After moving out from the cafeteria in National University of Singapore, Fishball Story is now operating (and co-owning) in a new coffeeshop in Geylang called Hungry Bee, together with Char Grill Bar and 818 Seafood

Woon Woon Pek Beehoon
Affordable Massive White Beehoon Filled With Fresh Seafood At Changi Village.
Woon Woon Pek Beehoon could very possibly be crowned the mother of all White Beehoons. Situated at Changi Village Food Centre, it serves white vermicelli with a chock-full of fresh seafood ingredients, all at an affordable price.
Meticulously selected, the seafood catches such as crayfishes, flower crabs, la la and prawns are brought in fresh every day.
Each serving comes with a generous portion of crispy pork lard, spring onions and cabbages.
Together with the seafood, these are used to create a broth that has a hint of natural sweetness without having the need to add in MSG or any other additives, for that matter.
I was willing to travel all the way to Changi from the West just to try their beehoon so that?s saying a lot.

Soon Huat Bak Kut Teh (順發肉骨茶)
Transforming lives with Bak Kut Teh at Simpang Bedok
Soon Huat Bak Kut Teh (順發肉骨茶) is a business of a second chance. It was started in April 2013 by Mr Jabez Tan, who spent 12 years in jail for drug and theft related offences.
During his imprisonment, he started off as a kitchen dishwasher but soon became the main prison chef and cooked for his inmates. Embracing his passion for cooking, he created a unique bak kut teh recipe for his shop.
Many of the staff in Soon Huat were hard-core criminals. Some were homeless, some had been involved in robbery and theft, whilst others participated in drug trafficking.
Yet they share the same goal ? to break away from their past destructive lifestyle and start anew.
The eatery hopes to give ex-offenders and former drug abusers a new lease of life.
Kinda similar to the Malaysian version of Klang bak kut teh, but Soon Huat?s one is milder to cater to local palate.
Don?t get me wrong, the broth is milder but still full bodied with slight sweetness.
The pork used has also been switched to Argentinian pork is used which is firm but soft enough to chew.
The natural sweetness and juices were evident.
I love Soon Huat?s bat kut teh, be it soup or dry. I love its braised tow ki which has an aromatic crispy.
Most importantly, I love that they give back to the society by hiring ex-convicts. Because everyone deserves a second chance.
