Jok Jok Mor
Jok Jok Mor sell Traditional Thai Claypot Porridge.
Jok Jok Mor is a newly opened Thai eatery at Rangoon Road.
Jok Jok Mor is Thai for ‘porridge in a pot’, and the eatery is one of the first to serve traditional Thai claypot porridge in Singapore.
Located at where the original Jewel Cafe & Bar used to be located at Rangoon Road, Jok Jok Mor is a new establishment that places its focus on Thai-style claypot porridge.
It is possible one of the first establishment to serve such fare within the sunny island of Singapore.
Being located within walking distance from Farrer Park MRT Station and situated around the area where Old Hen Coffee Bar, Non Entree Desserts, Enchanted Cafe and many others are at,
Jok Jok Mor seems to have retained much of its exterior fittings from its previous tenant; to shopfront mostly recognisable to most from its day being Jewel Cafe & Bar.
The interior, however, had seemingly gone through a bit of a revamp; while most of the furnishings and fittings were also retained, the interior now features neon lighting bearing the shop’s name behind the counter area, while the washed wood walls are replaced with that of a stucco-esque aesthetic.
The furnishings used are also rather simple, though carried an industrial look.
Serving up mainly Thai-style claypot porridge, the menu features a limited variety of claypot porridges, whilst also featuring a few side dishes for those who wish to share an item or two around the table. Beverages available at Jok Jok Mor includes mostly canned or bottled options

Noi’s Mushroom Minced Meat Noodles
The one and only famous Mushroom Minced Meat Noodles at Jalan Datoh.
In fact, this dish is so popular that hybrid versions have been concocted with the pork liver substituted for prawns or/and the pork balls replaced with wantons.
Other variations are essentially fish ball/cake noodles with minced pork and no other ingredients. However, the purist version of the dish will always have fresh sliced pork, pork liver, pork balls, pork dumplings and minced pork.
The best Bak Chor Mee (肉脞面) stall in Singapore has been the subject of contentious debate among local foodies alike.
If you like your Bak Chor Mee with a strong vinegar kick, then this is a great place to visit.
If you like your Ter Kwa (pig liver) then you will be dissapppointed. (They replaced it with prawns).
If you like your noodles with a bit of a toothy bite, then you will love it.
BUT if you like yours with plenty of lively Qness (springiness), then you will be dissappointed.
So, as you can see, there are going to be people who will enjoy it and others who will complain about it.
If you like your al dente noodles drenched in vinegar, this is the place.

Seng Kee Bak Chor Mee
Delicious Fish Maw Soup in Serangoon Gardens.
Nothing is more welcoming that a rich bowl of fishmaw soup filled with generous servings of minced pork, pork liver and quality fish maw, topped with braised mushroom slices.
Seng Kee has been in business for 36 years. Owner Mr Lee started out in Eunos before settling here in Serangoon Gardens a few years ago.
He is well known for tossing his bowl up into the air when he is cooking his Bak Chor Mee.
I have been a loyal fan of Seng Kee for many years. Just that whenever I visit, my camera is not with me and hence the delay in this posting.
A few weeks ago, I went back to fix my BCM cravings and was shocked that the stall was closed.
When I posted it in Instagram, Mr Lee’s daughter, Melody, informed me that they have shifted a few stalls away (stall 36).
Phew! So I went back again last week and got my cravings satisfied!
The noodles are cooked till al dente and tossed with their chilli and thick mushroom sauce.
Mr Lee said that the mushrooms are braised for at least 4 hours with some spices and it indeed goes well with the noodles.
And super addictive. To be honest, Serangoon Gardens is not too convenient for us but whenever I have the chance, I would gladly make a detour just for Seng Kee Mushroom Minced Meat Noodle.
That’s it, one of my favourite BCM blogged!

"NO SIGNBOARD" BAK CHOR MEE
No signboard or eye-catching decorations here, this is a nameless bak chor mee stall. The only sign you will see is “self service” and the “menu”. Located in the same coffee shop as Loo’s Hainanese Curry Rice, this unassuming stall serves up a mean bowl of Bak Chor Mee. So give the one in the market a miss and walk over. Be sure to enter the correct queue – people have broken down in tears after realising they were in the long Hainanese Curry Rice queue instead.
Seems like in the past, having no signboard became the easiest way to start a business - and this joins the gang.
Nested in the same coffee shop that is brought alive during lunch because of Loo's Hainanese Curry Rice, this stall garners the most traffic in the morning with snaking queues and minimally a 30 minute wait.
Early bird catches the worm? Hardly so when the elderly couple move to the tune of lullaby.
The noodles had an unmistakable alkaline taste, that of machine made noodles and lacked the springyness I so desired. Average at best, just no where near Tai Hwa's. I would queue for the latter in less than a heartbeat for double the waiting time even for that kind of satisfaction.

Huay Kwang Wanton Mee
Patrick 40, started this Huay Kwang Wanton Mee with his wife (who is from Thailand) more than 2 years ago.
The recipe and (secret) concoction of the sauce are both created by his wife, so you can be sure there is a touch from the land of smiles in this wanton mee!
You know how Thai-style wanton mee always has this plain appearance but is actually very flavourful and lardy?
Huay Kwang’s was no exception. Starting from $3.50, Huay Kwang’s Wanton Mee is coated with a familiar oil that is often used in Thai-style wanton mee.
Add some crispy savoury lard and chilli flakes for extra shiokness! The Recipe Hails From Thailand.
To be honest, this isn’t the best Thai-style wanton mee in Singapore for me.
But this is decent enough for me to yearn for it once in a while, especially so when our office is nearby.
And I will totally be back for the dumplings!

TIE FUN WAN BY CHEF KEN CHIA
After operating Rice&Fries for 5 years, Chef Ken Chia, 43, decided to shut the restaurant, and open Tie Fun Wan.
His decision stems from the desire to set aside more time for his family as being the boss of Rice&Fries required him to put in long hours at work.
Currently a father of 3, Chef Ken wants to be more family oriented and have a work-life balance.
After sourcing for almost a year, he found a cosy space near Farrer Park MRT.
At first glance, Tie Fun Wan seems to offer local Chinese cuisine, but they actually serve fusion dishes.
The reason why Chef Ken can serve the orders efficiently is because he sous vide most of his meats and eggs beforehand.
Having worked in the hotel F&B industry, Chef Ken has mastered the Western method of tenderising meats, and different cooking techniques.
The punny decorations all over the place shows how “fun” Chef Ken is.
All for laughs and no offence! Many of Chef Ken’s friends who are chefs themselves tend to hang out here after work.
A great news is that Tie Fun Wan will offer beer after getting the liquor license.

l Mahboob Indian Rojak
Go Nuts with Their Gratifying Peanut Sauce!
Online reviews raved about this Indian Rojak stall since its official opening at S11 Food court in Tampines.
They have now relocated to NTUC Income Tampines. I headed there and, oh my, the hype was real.
On a Friday night, we arrived at a seemingly queue-less restaurant that was packed with diners.
I thought we would get our food after a while, but boy was I wrong.
After picking out the ingredients for the rojak, we were issued a queue ticket with the number 81 on it.
The queue number then, was 63. And that was just the queue for rojak.
This was possibly one of the best indian rojaks I’ve ever tried. There are more than 30 ingredients that diners can pair with their to-die-for peanut sauce.

Jin Ji Teochew Braised Duck @ Chinatown Singapore 金记潮洲卤鸭
After patronizing many of the duck rice stalls recently in part of the island wide braised duck hunting, Jin Ji Teochew braised duck is one of the very few that manned by the young generation.
Melvin – the young man inherited the stall from the parents has no qualm to point out the problem: “Making braised duck is more tedious and requires more hard work than selling chicken rice.
We can comprehend the issue and understand the unappealing trade to be a hawker in the eyes of the younger generation, this is an exemplary example of a young man’s determination to continue the duck rice legacy, he seriously reserved a big thumb up from all of us.
The braised ducks are Melvin’s passion, the mother and son team will continue the work to glorify Jin Ji Teochew Braised Duck giving it legendary with the duck rice. It is heartening to see the younger generations willing to take on the baton though they are many more have dropped along the way.
How much can do so? Not sure but it is a reality we need to face.

KL Traditional Chilli Ban Mee
Malaysian-style Abalone Ban Mee With 5 Levels Of Spicy Challenge
Walk a couple of steps down from Kin Kin Ban Mee and you’ll meet its newly opened rival, KL Traditional Chilli Ban Mee, along the same corridor of Macpherson laced with equally delicious food places.
Clean walls, white tables and spaciousness define the interior of KL Traditional Chilli Ban Mee.
You’d be greeted enthusiastically by its staffs before finding a seat that fills the sides of the ‘up-scaled’ noodle shop.
Up to 10 different items to choose from are listed on it’s menu, mainly its signature bowls of ban mee, minced pork noodle, hand-made fishball noodle and soup.
What’s visiting the stall without adding in its signature, red fiery chilli, which comes in five different levels of spiciness. Set on all tables is the level three chilli.
You could walk up to the counter to get the other levels and customise your noodle according to your heat tolerance, or challenge yourself to go for level five.
The chilli packs a punch of heat, savoury with a hint of sweet aftertaste, adding a more rounded taste to the noodle.
The ban mee is springy and laced with the marinated mince meat with each bite.
Once you start, you won’t stop until the entire bowl is wiped out.
I’d head back for the Signature Abalone Combo Chilli Ban Mee, especially when it’s satisfying and scrumptious. If you’re wondering if it’s better than Kin Kin? You’ll have to come down to try it for yourself.

Un-Yang-Kor-Dai
Authentic Issan Cuisine Has Eluded Us Till Now.
Ever since my Bangkok trip, I will get an insatiable craving for Thai food almost every week.
This brought me to Un-Yang-Kor-Dai, a new Thai restaurant hailing from Khao Yai, Thailand, a two-hour drive from central Bangkok.
Situated at South Beach Road, this is the first outlet outside of Thailand, and the franchise specialises in Authentic Thai and Issan cuisine.
Due to its geographical proximity to Laos and Cambodia, Issan cuisine is spicier, and more sour than what we are used to.
Un-Yang-Kor-Dai has a modern interior complete with soft lighting, wood furniture, and colourful paintings, giving off rustic vibes that really make one feel at home.
We wanted to get a sense of the authenticity.
The majority of the local Thai food eateries focuses on the more common and typical Thai cuisine.
What sets Un-Yang-Kor-Dai apart from its competitors is its interpretation of the uncommon Issan cuisine.
I applaud Un-Yang-Kor-Dai for bringing us something different, and hope that you will find Issan cuisine unique, just as I did too.

Hokkien Man Hokkien Mee
Former Les Amis Chef Now Sells Hokkien Mee At Kopitiam Stall With 45-Min Queue.
Xavier Neo has lost 5kg in one week. Ever since the 43-year-old started his own Singaporean-style Hokkien mee hawker stall called Hokkien Man Hokkien Mee a fortnight ago, he has been working 14-hour days.
Every morning, he wakes up at 5am and makes his way to his stall at a kopitiam in Toa Payoh Lor 7, where he prepares prawn stock that takes three hours to cook.
He ends work at “around 7pm” after washing up at the end of a long, tedious day.
It’s a very different scene from Xavier’s previous job. For over a decade, the professional chef used to work at fine-dining restaurants.
(“I didn’t go to culinary school; I started from the lowest position as an apprentice and worked my way up”) — his last job was a sous chef at two Michelin-starred French restaurant Les Amis where he worked for over five years, and mod European restaurants Novus (now defunct) and The White Rabbit.
“The kitchen was air-conditioned back then, but my stall is hotter and more cramped,” he says.
“The biggest difference [between being a hawker and chef] is that I used to work eight to 10 hours a day as a chef, but now I work 14 hours. We’re running our own business, so we do everything ourselves.”
Our only grouse is that our plate of noodles is a little too wet, even though we usually like our Hokkien mee on the wet side. We’d request for it to be drier next time. We also find Alice’s sambal chilli — which tastes like classic nasi lemak chilli — a tad too sweet for HKM.
This one sure many read and I post here. I just went to try and my verdict was "GOOD".

777 Fried Hokkien Prawn Mee
777 Fried Hokkien Prawn Mee has two options on their menu — the original and Fried Hokkien Prawn Mee + Roasted Pork.
I decided to go for the small portion of Hokkien Mee with Roasted Pork to have more ingredients on my plate.
While ordering, I was chiefly curious as to how this new stall compared to the old Soon Kee Fried Hokkien Mee of my childhood.
Don’t be shy! The stall leaves a container of fried pork lard, right beside their utensils, which you can add onto your plate at your own discretion.
Some of the pork lard bits had gone soft, but most was still crispy. Nonetheless, it still added additional flavour and texture to the gooey Hokkien Mee!
While the prawns were fresh, the roasted pork was a little disappointing as the skin wasn’t all that crispy and the meat was a tad dry.
777 Fried Hokkien Prawn Mee uses more yellow noodles than thick bee hoon.
Although the noodles did have a slight taste of lye (which is sometimes used during the preparation process of noodles to give them a chewier texture),
mixing in the stall’s chilli not only got rid of it but added flavour and tanginess to the entire dish. To me, the quality of their chilli is consistent with that of Soon Kee’s.
If I had to describe what each mouthful of noodles mixed with their chilli sounds like in a voice-over, it’d be: “WAPAK!!!”

Fried Baby Squid Prawn Mee
A Gooey Plate Of Goodness With Generous Serving Of Pork Lard.
This stall serves a good plate of hokkien mee and I can tell from the endless queue during my lunch there.
However, I think this is good but not the best. I have had better ones elsewhere. Unfortunately if its in the West, this is one of the better one I have come across so far.
I decided to go with their medium portion. This stall also allows you to add your own portion of fried pork lard.
Likewise, there was a combination of both crispy and not-so-crispy bits which ultimately still worked at enhancing the dish’s texture and taste.
Although this stall’s chilli was more mellow and sweet, with a shrimp paste flavour, their gravy-soaked noodles had a more savoury and rich taste.
And of course, there’s fresh and chewy baby squids! They also use more thick bee hoon noodles than yellow noodles, which, I feel, give the dish a smoother texture.
I thoroughly enjoyed both plates of Hokkien Mee but if I were to come back to Bukit Batok again, I think I’ll be more inclined to go to Fried Baby Squid Prawn Mee because I prefer the overall flavour of their noodles and their squids.
This one sure many read and I post here. I just went to try and my verdict was "GOOD".
