Xiang Xiang (香香)
Xiang Xiang serves Singaporean cuisine.
The bowl of fish balls soup came with five large fish balls, the fish balls were larger than the ordinary fish balls that you will find from most of the fish ball noodle stalls.
The fish balls were hand made by the owner, the texture was not as bouncy as other good fish balls but you can truly taste the generous fish meat within each fish ball, definitely not the overly starchy filled fish balls commonly found in the market.
The soup was tasteful with the tinge of sweetness.
This is one of the stalls that I visited since secondary school.
So it has been a long...9 years that I visited this stall.
Personally, I don't know the owner but I know food and I love this bowl of noodles.
My kakis don't understand what's so fantastic about the stall and I cannot pin point to them what's so nice either.
I just happen to like the seasoning, fishballs and the Q-ness of the noodles. Please eat it immediately after it is served.
This will ensure the maximum chewiness of the noodles and the fishballs.
The 'ba you po' that they use certainly add alot of flavours to the noodles and since i don't eat spicy fishball noodles, I always eat it with tomato sauce instead.
The combination of all these brings me back to a simpler time when there is no such thing called jobs, office politics and backstabbers, only friends, jokes and laughter.
It is always subjective when food is being reviewed but regardless of what others say, this is my No.1 fishball noodle stall!
I promise, it’s worth the wait.

Mian Wang 1971
Salted Egg Calamari + Sambal Belachan Pork Belly Hokkien Mee At This Hidden Stall In Bukit Batok.
Tucked away in a tiny HDB coffeeshop at Bukit Batok, Mian Wang 1971 has been cooking up a storm since 1971.
Mian Wang 1971’s storefront is inconspicuous and simple.
In fact, I had a little trouble finding it because it was hidden at the corner of the coffee shop, right behind a pillar.
Seats and ambience wise, it’s pretty nondescript with tables available across the coffee shop, and the majority of them being outdoors.
When we visited the coffee shop, it was during lunch hour with sweltering afternoon heat.
There were only a handful of rotating fans, so even though I sitting outside, I was still sweating! So fair warning: bring plenty of tissue or be sure to quickly chope a seat near a fan.
It’s not something I would travel for, considering I stay in the East.
But the next time I’m in the area and craving some hearty and fragrant Hokkien mee, I’m definitely stopping by Mian Wang 1971.
I promise, it’s worth the wait.

Ah Seng Bak Chor Mee 亚成潮州肉脞面
Ah Seng Bak Chor Mee 亚成潮州肉脞面 located at Albert Centre Market & Food Centre (opposite Bugis Plus) was listed in the Singapore’s Michelin Guide with a “Michelin Plate”.
Located closest to Bugis MRT station, this hawker stall is founded by a simple factor worker-turned noodle seller, Ah Seng.
His father’s friend, who ran a popular Bak Chor Mee stall at Chinatown Complex, taught him all about BCM-cooking.
Turned out, his version was way different from his mentor’s, as it comes with mee pok that’s softer and thinner than most Bak Chor Mee stalls.
This helps as he could cater to the many seniors who frequent this food centre, and prefer their noodles softer.
Ah Seng serves affordable bowls of Bak Chor Mee, starting at $3.
The Fish Ball Kway Teow available in dry or soup versions, is priced only at $2.50 onwards.
Prices are kept low so more customers can afford and eat his food.
Appearance wise, they look lumpy as they are intentionally not kneaded too finely.
While I thought the sauce and soup might not stand out that much, the special item in the whole bowl was indeed those meat balls.
I personally tried this bak chor mee and thinks is value for money.
I promise, it’s worth the wait.

Warong Kim's
Assalamualaikum, food lovers! As you are all aware, Singapore has a mixture of races living peacefully together.
Even though I am Malay, I can't deny that there are other cuisines that attracted me. Tehee!
Warong Kim's Goreng Delights is a humble food stall that offers a pleasant experience with their menu featuring a variety of delicious Chinese cuisine.
They carefully prepare each dish using only the best ingredients to make sure that the colour, flavour and texture are perfect to cater to every palate.
Warong Kim's Goreng Delights has potential but for now its 3 stars in my books. Thankfully they are Halal Certified by MUIS in which is DEFINITELY good in my books. May return when needed.

Sumptuous Satay Bee Hoon at Bedok 85 Fengshan Market, With Michelin Bib Gourmand.
Satay bee hoon is one of those fast-disappearing dishes in Singapore, and I won’t be surprised if some of the millennials have yet to even try it before.
This place was better known as “Bedok 85” (famed for Soup Bak Chor Mee), was recently awarded the Michelin Bib Gourmand in Singapore.
This stall serves up Teochew Porridge in the daytime, and the famed Satay Beehoon from 5pm till midnight.
A one-man-show operation, be prepared to wait even if the queue is not that long.
Owner Mr Ng Kim Song prepares his sauce from scratch, including the roasting of peanuts and removal of the skin. No pre-mixes.
This was one of the best Satay Beehoon sauces I had, which was rich, unique and tasty – with layered flavours of savoury, sweet and only a tinge of spiciness.
Satay Beehoon may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but this is a pretty-good version to be found in the east of Singapore.

Geylang Laksa & Prawn Noodles
The 40-year legacy behind humble Sims Drive prawn mee.Old School Laksa since the 40’s!
Finding a stall like Geylang Laksa is like landing a 600kg Bluefin tuna.
In order to grow to that size, the tuna had to be able to siam (escape) the millions of hooks in the ocean which has managed to ensnare 96% of its compatriots over the years.
With a net as wide as the World Wide Web and thousands of food bloggers and facebookers, I am amazed to still be able to find stalls such as Geylang Laksa which is still pretty much un-googleable (ok un-bingble as well) after being in business for over 80 years!
There are some fans here, I am sure, who can still remember the man with the brown police hat (The kind that went with the shorts) peddling laksa along Geylang Road in the 70’s and 80’s.
He would start at Geylang Lor 1 at 7am and make his way to Geylang Lor 42 by midday and back to Lor 1 again by late afternoon. He had started selling laksa just after the war and had been doing this for forty years before his apprentice, Johnny Lim, took over.
The best word to describe this bowl of laksa is “Old School“.
Now, this may not mean much to those who were born after the school had been renovated, but for those who are old enough, “Old School” laksa is laksa which is very fragrant but not overly spicy or overly rich such that you can down a whole bowl and not feel jelak. (bloated)
I remember eating my very first bowl of laksa back in 1987 and that was exactly how I felt.
Super tasty, very fragrant, smooth and full bodied, yet easy on the stomach and mysteriously addictive.
This really is a hidden gem! Old school laksa and prawn mee.
If you love these two dishes, then you owe it to yourself to make a beeline to the stall ASAP!
Good and cheap doesn’t get any better than this!

Mr Duck (大永)
Mr Duck serves duck rice, porridge, noodles and other dishes like claypot curry chicken, and mixed vegetables.
This portion costs $7.90. The kway was soft and smooth, but was disappointed as the soup was bland.
The pork meat was tender and thoroughly braised with dark sauce.
The innards were clean and did not have taste of bitter grime.
The salted preserved vegetables brought a crunchy touch to this dish.
Their braising sauce was solid pom pi pi.
Not extremely thick and sticky, but good enough to coat the meat and offals well.
I ordered a one person version which has pork belly, beancurd, pig’s skin, pig’s intestine and more.
It went well with the soup kway and vinegar garlic chilli sauce.
Nonetheless, I felt that it was average as a whole, and not worth the 45 minutes wait.

Famous Amoy Street Lu Mian
The stall can trace its origin back to the 60’s when Mr Lee Kian Huat’s father starting selling lor mee from a push cart along the back lane of the Jit Poh Building.
They moved to Amoy Food Centre in 1982 and at the time, Amoy St was famous for two lor mee stalls.
Yuan Chun lor mee was on the 2nd level while they were on the first. In 1997, they switched to selling fish soup because Mrs Lee was pregnant with her first child.
The couple decided to resurrect the old lor mee recipe 12 years ago when they moved to their current premises.
I have been experiencing a lor mee renaissance.
I re-discovered how delicious lor mee can be after tasting Lay Eng during our food trail in Kampung Ubi and just a week later my friend recommended this heritage stall at Whampoa market food centre which turned out to be another delicious discovery!

Kok Kee Wanton Mee 国记云吞面
The popular Wanton Noodles Stall Has Reopened.
Fans of their Wanton Mee should be delighted to read this piece of news… Kok Kee Wanton Mee 国记云吞面 has announced that they would make a return on the 12th of June.
The location is set to be at 30 Foch Road, close to defunct Lavender Food Square where the stall previously was.
Checked with auntie on the opening hours, she said “12pm till sold out”.
There are those who call Kok Kee the “Best Wanton Noodles in Singapore”.
Well, some say it is overrated, and used to taste much better in the past. I am just very happy to have it back.
Kok Kee’s winning element was probably the special secret recipe sauce, poured all over the springy noodles with an agreeable bite.
To be honest, the thin char siew (that sometimes borders on tasting card-boardy) and pretty-average wantons were nothing to shout about.
BUT the overall combination was sumptuously addictive, and can keep fans coming back again and again.
I ate this since I was a teenager, when it was priced at $3.50 – from what I remember, it was considered very expensive then.
Nonetheless, I felt that it was average as a whole, and not worth the 45 minutes wait.

King’s Laksa Steamboat
Authentic Laksa Steamboat With Over 80 Free-Flow Ingredients At Teck Chye Terrace.
If you’re ever walking along Teck Chye Terrace and notice this massive sign, then you’ve probably come across King’s Laksa Steamboat before.
Just a stroll away from Serangoon’s NEX, this steamboat restaurant is just one of many shophouses located along the stretch.
What they’re known for here is an all-you-can-eat steamboat buffet that comes with an affordable price tag— not to mention, various soup bases such as Laksa and Mala,
that can be paired with over 80 different steamboat ingredients.
The interior of the restaurant is simplistic, with a single colour scheme that runs throughout the restaurant and a few overhead lamps that have an orangey glow to them.
We visited during lunch hour and were surprised to find that it wasn’t quite as crowded as expected to be, so it’s safe to say that you can have your steamboat in peace.
Upon selecting the soups, we proceeded to take a look at their selection of ingredients laid out on the counter.
You’ll find that for the most part, the choices offered are pretty standard, with a range of vegetables such as, broccoli, corn, cabbage, alongside mushrooms and crunchy lotus roots.
I promise, it’s worth the wait.

Ah Seah Teochew Porridge (Teck Chye Terrace)
Ah Seah Teochew Porridge serves a wide variety of steamed fish, braised meats and vegetables with plain porridge.
The porridge was okay – it was cheap and warm to our bellies – and that was enough to make us happy that night. It’s not particularly mindblowingly good, but it was comfort food enough.
This is the BEST teochew muay ever!!! Well to me that is! ... I know everyone has their own favourite teochew muay haunt as since it's comfort food.. it's e porridge which u r most comfy with right?
Ah Seah has been around for about 30 years and is an old household name in the Hougang vicinity... Since this area is pretty much THE teochew -land,,, it makes sense that this teochew muay in e heart of e teochew land is the teochew muay king for the teochews like me!
I've lived in the vicinity from young and my family + relatives have frequented this place countless of times.. My grandfather to my father to us kids ... and possibly all our future kids would have to make a pilgrimage here as well...ha! Now that I'm pretty much staying opposite Ah Seah.. I can tell u for sure that e endless queues esp on e weekends r a true testament to e good old comfort food here!
First up would b e porridge itself... e porridge itself is slightly on a thicker consistency than e usual watery version... I've alwaz hated e watery version (haha wat kinda teochew am i? but ah seah knows me best!) hence this gooey thicker porridge is not too watery not too thick but it's juz right! (*roll eyes*.. so goldilocks!)
One of my fave here would b e fishcakes! i totally lurvveeeeee it! It's actually quite Q n is not fishy.. perhaps i'm a little biased becoz i pretty much dunk e fish cakes into e vinegared chilli! yummy! i totally loved e vinegared chilli "shen ni chiow"... sour n tangy with a little spicy? very appetizing! Another porridge fave is e minced pork in black bean sauce..it's a very comfort food much like one would cook at home n it goes great with e muay!
I'm a fan of salted veggies so it's alwaz on e table...but e kiam chye here has slowly transformed more into kiam chye buai... ie less leaves more stems which i dun really likey so salted veggies fans take note! The cabbages is a safe choice n again has a very home cooked feel to it.. my parents lurrve it.. I likey e salted egg as well..
The "hae bee hiam" is not very fragrant so i would skip this but e steamed sotong is quite fresh n Q!
Some of e "hidden finds" would be e chilli lala... OMG this is verrrrrrrrrryyyyyyyyyyyyyy good! It might not looked that great but it sure is! The sauce is quite amazing.. very nice clam taste + garlic taste + chilli ... i likey alot! Not very teochew muay to me but i'm fine with it!
Another would b e steamed fish... i'm dun like fish generally much less steamed fish but e fishes here r fresh fresh fresh! A whole fish cost abt $10 or so n e owner personally hand-picked e fishes from e market (my mum bumped into him at e market). We only order this fish "no her soon" or something n it goes great with e chilli as well! yum! (u can ask for it if u dun see it on display n they will steam it for u)
They used to sell fantastic duck meat as well but stopped when they leased out a stall to sell duck meat... however e "lo" or gravy is still very tasty n goes wonderful with e porridge or rice.. The dishes r served generally lukewarm and sometimes e porridge as well but if u go on a weekend? e porridge is served piping hot!
Definitely one of the best teochew muay around! Ask any teochew foodies in e area and ah seah name will pretty much pops out... no fancy modern dishes juz very comfort home-cooked food..
This is one of the few lunch place I will patron every week. I love their dishes just like home cooked food. Yummy!
I promise, it’s worth the wait.

You Kee XO Restaurant (有记XO烧腊之家)
Nowyou don’t have to travel across the causeway for awesome roast meat in Johor Bahru.
The Famous JB Roast Meat Eatery With Charcoal-Fired Herbal Soup open it store in singapore At Joo Chiat.
Founded by Mr You Kee in 1996, You Kee XO Restaurant has four outlets in JB.
The latest one has opened right in the ever-popular KSL Mall in February 2018.
You Kee XO Restaurant is famous for its herbal soup and roast meats.
The giant urns at the shopfront is a special feature that you’ll see in all their restaurants.
This family-run establishment is the FIRST in Johor Bahru to boil soup in urns over a constant charcoal fire for a good 15 hours.
It’s been 15 years, and You Kee shows no signs of stopping this unique practice of using urns to simmer their famous herbal soups.
I was asking the owner if XO sauce is used in the dishes since XO is in his signboard.
He laughed and explained that in Malaysia, many stalls use terms like “king” or “imperial” in their names. So he thought of adding XO as a sign of superiority. How interesting!

58 Minced Meat Noodle
There are two popular 58 Bak Chor Mee in Singapore: The stall called “58 Minced Meat Mee” at Bedok New Changi Road specialises in the soup style BCM; while “58 Minced Meat Noodle” at Taman Jurong is known for its dry version.
On a search for the best Bak Chor Mee in Singapore, I headed all the way to Taman Jurong Market and Food Centre, only to find the stall closed (Lesson learnt: check their Facebook.)
That was when I found out that they opened a 2nd branch at OSG Suntec City, which also houses another Nasi Lemak stall.
Note that they do not open on Sundays and Public Holiday, also because I learnt through the ‘hard’ way.
58 Minced Meat Noodle started way by in 1973, now managed by 2nd generation hawker Deon Ang.
For a venue at Suntec City, the price is still kept very affordable at $5 or $6, in which you can choose your noodle type from mee kia, mee pok, kway teow, bee hoon etc.
I suspect it will get super crowded (especially after this post goes out), so heading before lunch time may be your best bet.
58 Minced Meat Noodle started way back in 1973, with many staying in Jurong which counts as its fans.
Great to see one of our well loved Bak Chor Mee move at a more convenient location.
Take note that the Taman Jurong stall remains closed till further notice.

Lai Heng Mushroom Minced Meat Noodle
They have recently moved from Block 51 Toa Payoh Lorong 6 to the current location.
I was there slightly after 1 pm on a weekday for lunch. I was told that their mee pok and mee kia have already sold out and left with just mee tai mak, bee hoon and yellow noodles.
I was given a number tag after making the payment. I waited for more than 35 minutes before seeing my number displayed on the LED panel.
Each bowl is served with pieces of lean meat, liver, minced meat and a handful of braised mushroom.
After tossing it, the pool of watery sauce consisting the chilli and vinegar beneath the pile of yellow noodles was still there.
Apparently, the sauce was too thin to be able to coat the noodles well.
My dining companion took a mouthful and pushed it away right after.
He said, "No. I do not like it. The yellow noodles do not go well with the sauce and it was also a little too spicy for me."
I did not request for extra chilli to be added when ordering. The ingredients were relatively fresh, particularly the nicely cooked liver and the braised mushroom.

Ming Fa Fishball
Mingfa's history goes back to 1946, where our business started on a pushcart along the street of Chinatown.
Our founder, Lim Chye Kang, insisted that our fishballs were to be made from 100% fish meat and that they were to be made and sold on the spot.
Building upon the popularity of his handmade fishballs and emphasising on fish quality, he rallied his three sons to expand the food menu and establish more food stalls.
It was only in 1973 that our current Director, Lim Gek Meng, took over and semi-automated our business model.
Before long, more local delights such as minced pork noodles, chicken cutlet noodles, laksa, and curry chicken grew in popularity.
Today, our business lies mainly in our manufacturing arm and our retail arm.
Ming Fa have 12 outlets islandwide and 5 outlets in Indonesia, Jakarta.
From the traditional food stall in Chinatown to the more upscale Upper Thomson Outlet, Mingfa has enticed our own pool of loyal customers and we would like to thank you for all your support throughout the years.
