Ah Hua Teochew Fishball Noodles
The most common hawker food in Singapore is, perhaps, a bowl of comforting fishball noodles.
You?ll easily find 2 or 3 stalls selling fishball noodles in every hawker center, and at least 1 stall in a coffeeshop.
Call it basic, but I like basic. To me, it?s a classic that I?ll never get sick of. Bouncy fishballs sitting atop a messy pile of mee pok (sorry mee kia) really screams comfort food to me, especially if it costs 3 bucks or less.
It?s easy to do fishball noodles but the difficult part is doing a great bowl of it.
Started by 60-year-old Ah Hua, Ah Hua Teochew Fishball Noodles features authentic Teochew fishball noodles prepared with handmade ingredients.
Uncle Ah Hua started his business from scratch, where he tweaked his father?s recipe for handmade fish dumplings and homemade traditional fishball noodles. He took it one step further and even came up with his own handmade yong tau foo.
The business took off and he was managing 5 stalls island-wide, and a central factory. Owing to the economic downturn, the success was short-lived as he had to sell his assets to make ends meet.
Now, Uncle Ah Hua continues to run the only stall he has left whilst still maintaining the same level of standards as before here at Pandan Gardens.
Seeing that her dad was struggling to keep his passion and business alive, 29-year-old Jean quit her full-time job to run the stall together with her dad, in hopes of bringing the business back to its former glory.
Besides a fishball noodle stall, Ah Hua Eating House also houses a small zhap cai png stall and a drink stall.
Uncle Ah Hua and Jean told me that they have to close the stall at 3pm daily in order to make all the ingredients by hand so that they will be in time for sale the next day.
From fish dumplings to fish cakes to fish balls, Uncle Ah Hua creates everything from scratch.
Even his chili paste is homemade so you won?t be able to taste this anywhere else!

Ming Yun Famous Fried Hokkien Prawn Noodle
Geylang East Centre Food Centre - A Surprisingly Good Plate Of Fried Hokkien Mee.
Ming Yun Famous Fried Hokkien Prawn Noodles serves Singaporean and Chinese cuisine. They are famous for their Fried Hokkien Prawn Noodle. Come and enjoy their food in a very affordable budget!
This is my first time visiting Geylang East Centre Food Centre and I chanced upon Ming Yun Famous Fried Hokkien Prawn Noodle which serves a decently good plate of fried hokkien mee.
During my visit, the stall is run by an uncle alone who is probably is around 50-60 years old. Apparently the stall has been around for some time but has relocated several times.
As far as I know, it used to be in Redhill, Bedok 85 and Tampines before settling down at its current location.

Jin Xi Lai (Mui Siong) Minced Meat Noodles
Bak Chor Mee in Little India
While Bak Chor Mee is loved across the island, Little India is one of the last places I would expect to find a great bowl of these noodles. Tucked away in a coffee shop on Veerasamy Road is Mui Siong Minced Meat Noodles, which dishes out bowl after bowl of awesome Bak Chor Mee!
Justin opened this stall together with his sisters. They learned the skills from their mother.
Mui Siong was the initial stall name when their mother first started. Mui represents plum tree while siong represents pine tree.
These trees are strong and will not wither through four seasons. Hence, their mother hope that the brand will stay strong.
Upon placing my order, I was told that there was a 15-20 minute wait for my noodles. This showed me that Mui Siong has a loyal following, despite its relatively obscure location
The key to a bowl of great Bak Chor Mee lies in its sauce. A sauce that is not well balanced can ruin the dish.
Mui Siong?s savoury sauce is brightened by chilli sauce, and lightened by the acidity of black vinegar. The oil from the crispy pork lard added a nice richness and smoothness to the sauce as well.
Many Bak Chor Mee stalls tend to overcook their ingredients, resulting in tough and dry pieces of pork, so I was really pleased to find tender and soft pieces of pork in Mui Siong?s Soup! Pork liver is especially hard to cook well, but Mui Siong?s pork liver was soft and creamy and a delight to bite into.
The Fishball Noodles had a generous portion of fishballs, with my medium order having 6-7 fishballs.
The fishballs were bouncy and had were not fishy at all. The soup had a cleaner and lighter taste compared to the Bak Chor Mee soup, probably due to the lack of sweetness that the pork brings.
That being said, both soups were still spectacular, containing much more flavour than the soup from your run-of-the-mill noodle shop. Even though it was a warm day, I couldn?t help but slurp spoonful after spoonful of soup!
This is one of the better Bak Chor Mee I have had, and I would definitely come here again if I am in the area. If you consider yourself a Bak Chor Mee connoisseur, then head to either this location or the other outlet at Bukit Merah

Hong Seng Curry Rice
I used to think that Hainanese Curry Rice was just a fancier version of Cai Fan. After all, can?t you get curry sauce at your standard Cai Fan store as well? However, I could not have been more wrong about that.
Hong Seng Curry Rice has really shown me that Curry Rice is so much more than just cooked items haphazardly put over some rice and curry!
As the name implies, the curry sauce is the most important part of curry rice! The blend of spices used in Hong Seng?s curry provides a nice warmth and fragrance without being too spicy.
The addition of coconut milk also makes the sauce rich and creamy. The curry sauce pairs especially well with the Hainanese Pork Chop! The Pork Chop is coated in a layer of cream crackers before being deep-fried, adding a nostalgic crunch and flavour.
The pork strips were thick, meaty, juicy and tender. Don?t miss out on this classic ingredient!
Not to be overshadowed by the stellar meat dishes, the Braised Cabbage is also something I would highly recommend!
The cabbage is braised till soft, while still retaining some of its natural crunchiness.
With so many dishes, the possible flavour combinations to try at Hong Seng Curry Rice are practically endless! Not to mention that the dishes are very reasonably priced.
I will definitely be back for more!

Grandma?s Noodle Review
Seafood Ke Kou Mian And Laksa At Sengkang. Big portions and fresh seafood at Grandma?s Noodle.
Growing up, I always thought that lobster and crayfish were the height of luxury in terms of food. But recently, it has been getting easier to find less pricey options of these luxe seafood, which is good news for crustacean lovers like myself.
Grandma?s Noodle provides affordable seafood noodles to residents living around Sengkang.
Grandma?s Noodle has been around for six months, with three outlets at Sengkang, Hougang, and Bedok.
Do note that the one at Hougang is a yong tau foo stall.
The stall?s menu is rather standard for a noodle joint, so we ordered the three recommended dishes. The soup bases are made in-house, and are kept bubbling in large pots for the whole day.
The coffee shop is large and breezy, but you?ll definitely want to get indoor seating. We made the mistake of sitting outside, resulting in my dining companion and I being attacked by various bugs.
The coffee shop is right next to a field and a hiking trail, and is a bit too close to nature for comfort.
Grandma?s Noodle also serves ma la from the same unit, though their main focus is their noodle dishes.
Fresh, high quality, and affordable seafood can be found at this quiet corner of Sengkang, and it?s something the owners take pride in. They were quick to ask for feedback, always seeking to improve.
Despite the flaw in texture, the crayfish came in a large portion and was well worth the price. The soup bases were suitable for the noodles and were impressive for newly-made recipes. That said, it couldn?t beat the addictive, traditional laksa.
Grandma?s Noodle provides a hearty meal at reasonable prices. Even if crayfish isn?t your thing, the noodles and soup hold up on their own. If you?re still hungry for noodles, check out our review of Zhen Jie Seafood for even more crayfish goodness.
I will definitely be back for more!

Chee Cheong Fun Club 猪肠粉慧馆
Unique KL-Style Curry Chee Cheong Fun & Laksa Chee Cheong Fun in Maxwell Food Centre.
I?m sure we Singaporeans are well-familiar with the two types of chee cheong fun dishes we typically get here.
One is the Hong Kong-style, and the other, our local version. But what if I told you that you can actually have chee cheong fun in laksa or with curry?
News of a place serving my favourite dim sum dish in such unique ways brought me to Maxwell Food Centre.
Undeniably one of the busiest hawker centres in Singapore, it?s well-known for housing a multitude of popular food spots.
The owner, Ah Hui, hails from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Despite living in Singapore for almost 10 years now, she has only been in business for about a year.
Ah Hui explained that she dearly missed the Kuala Lumpur-style chee cheong fun from home. Thus, she decided to quit her job in the banking industry to open up a chee cheong fun speciality stall.
With such unique and tasty dishes, I?m certain this wouldn?t be my last visit to Chee Cheong Fun Club. Their KL Famous Curry CCF was a straight win for me.
What?s more, I don?t have to travel all the way to Kuala Lumpur for it!

Soi 47
Hidden Gem. Affordable, Authentic Thai Food At Toa Payoh
https://danielfooddiary.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/soi2.jp g" alt="" border="0" />
Owner Mr Ang of Soi 47 probably repeated this a few times when he was introducing the highlights of this casual Thai eatery.
Indeed, for many Thai dishes, MSG is included to enhance the taste but Mr Ang was insistent of not adding for health reasons.
”Our customers come first, and many of them are sensitive to MSG… And I got not much hair left. I must also love what I sell and eat,” he replied candidly.
Even though Soi 47 is a casual, no-frills eatery.
If you walk to the side of the restaurant, you would notice a little garden where fruits and herbs such as basil, lemon grass, and tomatoes are grown.
The kitchen team is mainly made up of Thai chefs, which ensures a certain level of authenticity.
The only part not as ‘authentic’ was the non-addition of MSG, and therefore they use additional spices and herbs to heighten the flavours of the food served, as Thai food is generally rich and robust.
While I won’t say Soi 47 is the best Thai restaurant around, it serves up a range of appetising Thai dishes suitable for the family, all at a comfortable price point.
I think this can be a hit. Perhaps it just needs more awareness, as it lacks visibility at a corner unit of a Toa Payoh HDB flat.

HENRY'S CHICKEN RICE 兴利鸡饭
Most of the ?roasted chicken? sold at our hawker centres are not actually roasted but deep fried or at least bathed in hot oil in order to produce that beautiful, bronzed skin color!
I actually prefer roasted chicken to white chicken and if given a choice, I would choose it over white chicken anytime!
Unfortunately, there aren?t many stalls which actually specialise in roasted chicken which always seem to play 2nd fiddle to white poached chicken.
However, over at the sleepy little hawker centre in Commonwealth Crescent is a couple who have been specializing in roasted chicken rice since 1985. I was visiting the hawker centre for Hammee?s burger when I happened to meet a friend of mine who swears that he doesn?t eat roasted chicken rice from anywhere else!
The stall is called ?Henry? chicken rice, which would have been even more unusual back in the 80′s.
It turns out that the stall was named after their son who ironically didn?t end up taking over the business, unlike Abdhus Salam and Habib?s, the two Indian rojak stalls over at Ayer Rajah Food Centre.
I have read numerous reviews about Henry's Chicken Rice at Commonwealth Crescent Market & Food Centre just across from Hao Hao Noodle House and I decided to check them out.
I am particularly intrigued by two of the reviews which mentioned about a certain black-faced auntie. Why is she black-faced? I reminded myself not to blindly believe everything that was posted online. Who knows, it might have been a disgruntled customer bad mouthing her?
On the day of my visit, I approached the stall with an open mind. Surely, the auntie will not be black-faced for no rhyme or reason?
Her back was facing me when I stood in front of the stall. It was still early so a queue have not build up yet.
When she turned around, I have to say, I was taken aback by her expression. Her face was, like they said - black.
Roasted chicken with a really good chilli sauce and soy sauce dressing that brings back memories!

Edmond Chicken Rice
Halal Certified Chicken Rice in Tanglin Halt.
Edmond Chicken Rice and I didn?t start off on a good note. The young chicken rice owner was angry with one of my hawker recommendations and slammed me on my Facebook. I don?t blame him because he queued 2 hours and didn?t get a impressive bowl of noodles.
But I was just upset for the words he used, which somehow affected my reputation. So we found out about his chicken rice stall and decided to give it a try.
34-year-old Edmond started working for chicken rice stalls when he was 16 years old. One of his previous job was to cook chicken rice in a halal food court and that?s where he became experienced in halal food and started his own business Edmond Chicken Rice.
At Tanglin Halt outlet, he teaches an Indonesian couple how to cook chicken rice and they have been with him for many years and are good cooks! The poached chicken is juicy and tender with glistening skin and goes well with the mildly-flavoured rice.
I would love the rice to be more flavourful and comes with a punch, but my husband prefers it this way. Don?t be fooled by the pale looking chilli sauce. Their chilli sauce is really power, gives you the kick immediately.

Ah Boy Chicken Rice
Chicken rice is a simple dish. But it?s always the simpler dishes that demand the greater work and attention to detail.
I have been wanting to write a list of the best chicken rice in Singapore. But there are always tip offs about good chicken rice recommendations, hence it seems like a never ending conquest.
Ah Boy chicken rice stall has been a favourite for our local celebrity chef Eric Teo as he raved about this hidden gem in his Facebook about 2 years back. Our foodie group once paid a visit here on a Sunday but it was unfortunately closed.
Since then, I have always been wanting to come back again and try a plate of chicken rice. I have finally did it.
Ah Boy Chicken Rice has been one of the most talked about chicken rice in the western part of Singapore as Local celebrity chef Eric Teo has shared on his facebook page that this is one of the best chicken rice that he has ever tasted in Singapore.
Roasting chicken is an art by itself. Here, the roasted chicken has a crispy and thin skin that we love but the meat was slightly on the dry side. Poached chicken, however, fare much better. It was tender and cooked just right, maintaining a smooth texture.
With firm, sweet meat and jelly-like skin doused in a delicious mix of soy sauce, sesame oil, and chicken oil, it gave a slight lift in flavours and we can?t help but to order second and third helpings of rice! One important elements of fragrant oily rice which was topped with tender chicken. I thought the rice itself is fluffy and loose with a nice aroma and not too greasy.
However, I found the tangy chilli dip to be a little watery. We also ordered a sweet and sour tofu which is a good accompaniment to the chicken rice.
He said their chicken is very tender and he particularly liked their chili as it is full of flavor with fresh pureed ginger added.
The exact location is in V6 Food Court at Choa Chua Kang Crescent, just a stone's throw from Yew Tew MRT station.
Mr Chai, the owner, came from Malaysia and prior to opening this stall, he has worked in different hotels.
Overall, his chicken rice was quite decent but not good enough to be amongst the best chicken rice in my list. I would not mind eating again if i happen to be in the vicinity.

Uncle Lee?s Hong Kong Noodle & Rice
A Little Bit of Mongkok in Telok Blangah
Uncle Lee?s Hong Kong Noodle & Rice is no stranger to long queues in front of their stall.
I?ve been to plenty of popular stalls but Uncle Lee?s Hong Kong Noodle & Rice stood out a little more to me as there were 2 signboards hanging at the storefront.
I escaped the place just as the lunch crowd arrived.
The shop owner would walk out of his stall to take orders from each of the customers in line. Uncle Lee?s Hong Kong Noodle & Rice closes rather early, at 2pm, so do come before that to get your plate!
Had a plate of chicken wanton noodles and added soy sauce chicken. Total cost for this was $4.
The soup was surprisingly well-flavoured and tasted good. The overall taste of the noodles were good too. The noodles had the springy texture but the ingredients were quite little.
There were some char siew, dumplings and soy sauce chicken. The chilli was a little oily but it went well with the noodles which had a smooth texture as well. Overall, it's worth a try

Xiao Di Fried Prawn Noodle
One of the best Hokkien Mee in Singapore
The noodles soaking the rich prawn stock, the whiff of wok hei in the air, the spicy sambal belachan at the side? That?s what you?ll find at Xiao Di Fried Prawn Noodle (小弟炒虾面).
I?ve known Terence since the day he started his Xiao Di Fried Prawn Noodle stall in Serangoon North 6 years ago.
Being a hawker is not exactly the easiest job but this 28-year-old young hawker aspires to cook the best Hokkien Mee in Singapore.
He has carved his name as an up-and-coming hawker star who has been featured in many media and also participated in Singapore Day in Melbourne.
Xiao Di means ?young brother? in Chinese, but Terence has more than 10 years of cooking experience.
He was working at his friend?s stall frying Hokkien mee, carrot cake and oyster omelette before he decides to perfect his perfect his skills at various well-known fried prawn noodles stalls.
Coupled with trial and error recipes and cooking techniques picked up on the internet, he finally gained the confidence to start out on his own.
Terence strongly believes that cooking with passion will make a difference to the final dish. Therefore, he is very particular about the preparation time and choosing the right ingredients. His stock is prepared using prawns from Thailand, which have more roe for extra flavour.
One mouthful and you?ll close your eyes in a moment of divine enjoyment.
We have tried many popular stalls that serve hokkien mee in Singapore and I personally prefer Xiao Di Fried Hokkien Mee.
Wet and gooey, Xiao Di?s fried prawn noodle is stir-fried in rich stock gravy, topped with slices of cuttlefish, fresh prawns, crispy pork lard and slices of roast pork. All these beautiful flavours are bound together with a thick and robust prawn stock well absorbed by the noodles.
You?ll be hit by a strong taste of ?wok hei?, which we particularly liked.
The garlic and pork lard further accentuated the overall fragrance of the Hokkien Mee making it simply irresistible.
Squeeze a bit of lime and pair the noodles with Xiao Di?s specially made chilli sauce, you will be able to fully enjoy this delish plate of fried Hokkien mee.

GUAN KEE WANTON NOODLE
GEYLANG EAST MARKET & FOOD CENTRE
Guan Kee Wanton Noodle, to me, is another stall that evokes that sense of nostalgia. Having been around for more than 20 years, the couple is friendly and pretty efficient.
Char siew here is the old school bright red ones. But the egg noodles, ahhhh? it?s cooked just right ? al dente and comes with a good bite. That?s the highlight. The homemade chilli that was tossed with the noodles was shiok, with a mix of chilli and ketchup.
My friends from Malaysia never understand why our version of wanton mee needs ketchup, but to me, that?s how it should be. As for the dumplings, they are small yet powerful.
Again, taste is subjective and everyone has individual preference on your favourite wanton mee. For me, this is good enough.
By the time I am done with my fried Hokkien mee at Geylang East Market & Food Centre, the rain has eased a little but still showed no signs of stopping anytime soon. Now, what do you do when you are stuck at the food centre? Well, you eat some more!
From my earliest memories of wanton noodle, it was never about the fatty char siew.
Somehow, the sauces and noodles play a big part and it was only until later that hawkers are serving well roasted fatty char siew.
Or maybe I wasn?t exposed to it right from the beginning because I only eat Hock Kee Wanton Noodles in Kebun Baru Food Centre since young.

HOLLYWOOD ZHENGUANG WANTAN NOODLES 好莱坞正光雲吞麵
HAIG ROAD MARKET & FOOD CENTRE
The old Hollywood Theater would be no stranger to those living in the east. Built in 1958, it has seen some of the biggest movie stars from Hong Kong like Siew Fung Fung, Fong Bo Bo, Chan Bo-chu, Nancy Sit, etc performing live on stage.
Just behind the theater is a canteen called Hin Hollywood Canteen where Zhenguang Wantan (sic) Noodles has been doing business for fifty years.
The area was demolished in 2011 to make way for redevelopment and standing in its place now is the new One KM Mall.
What happened to Zhenguang Wantan Noodles stall then? It shifted across the road into Haig Road Market & Food Centre.
There is a very heartwarming story behind this stall. Decades ago, their neighbor passes away leaving behind several young children.
Mr Lim, the owner of Zhenguang Wantan Noodle then took it upon himself to take care of them. Not only did he provide for them, he also make sure that they do not go astray.
Despite having three children of his own and probably not making much from the noodle stall, he loved them as they were his own.
Now all grown up, the children had their own lives and careers; one of them even helps out at the stall.
Now, isn't that a very selfless and noble act?
